Communication Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing( 2024-2025) The Communication Contest for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Contest offers an opportunity for students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing to present their thoughts in the community, gaining skills, which can only come from signing or speaking to a large audience. Patterned after the Optimist Oratorical Contest, the contest offers youth the chance to compete in speech or sign language with the chance to win a college scholarship.
2024-2025 Essay Contest Application replacing the old application from last year This contest requires students under 19 as of October 1 of the current Optimist International year (Oct 1 - Sep 30) and who are educated in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean to compose a 700- to 800-word essay around a central idea. The contest is designed to develop writing and critical thinking skills. One scholarship of $2,500 per District is awarded by Optimist International each year.
Oratorical Contest (2024-2025) The Oratorical Contest is open to students under 19 as of October 1 of the current Optimist International year (Oct 1 - Sep 30) and who are educated in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean. Students are required to prepare a 4- to 5-minute speech on a pre-assigned topic. This contest is designed to assist youth in gaining public speaking experience and provide them with an opportunity to compete for a scholarship. For more information, click here.
THE SYLVIA RICKS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (2024-2025) The Optimist Club recognizes that education is the key to a better way of life for our children. And no one with the Optimist Club of the Westbank understood that connection better than our long time member Sylvia Ricks. Mrs. Ricks worked tirelessly for the children of the Westbank. It is because of her strong conviction in service and her belief in education, that we name our scholarship in her honor. The Sylvia Ricks Scholarship Award is given to a west bank student whose services to the community and academic achievements are best aligned with their future goals.
